Originally from the north of England, Marilyn studied the organ with the late William Morgan at Bolton Parish Church before studying with the late Eric Chadwick at the RMCM (now the RNCM). She subsequently became Organ Scholar at Girton College Cambridge, studying with Gillian Weir, after which she embarked on a life-long teaching career.

After raising a family and moving to London she became Organist at St Augustine’s, Honor Oak Park, and later at Christ’s Chapel, Dulwich. She joined the music department at James Allen’s Girls’ School, where she still teaches the organ, piano, theory.

Marilyn is the first woman organist in the 400 year history of Christ’s Chapel Dulwich, and she established a popular Sunday night recital series in 2010, following the restoration of the 1760 George England by the late William Drake.

In 2013 Marilyn became an Accredited Teacher for the Royal College of Organists and spends much time with older students who dream of becoming a diploma holder. She also gives recitals, specialising increasingly in the music of Buxtehude and Sweelinck. Marilyn belongs to various organists’ organisations who promote performing and teaching and is a committee member for the Society of Women Organists.

She has performed in the UK, particularly in London, and also in Europe, including Italy, Germany, Spain, Portugal, and Eastern Europe, as an organ accompanist to English choirs who like to explore European choral repertoire in their original settings. Her most recent London solo recitals took place in St Michael’s Cornhill, and in the chapel of King’s College, London. She has also played a duet recital with her husband Norman in Bellingwolde, in the northern part of Holland. Forthcoming recitals are in Ripon Cathedral with her husband Norman in May and in St John’s Sidcup in July.

Hobbies include solving the easiest crossword clues available and Marilyn is also a keen student of yoga.
